Badminton Club of DC

About Us

Capital Badminton

The Badminton Club of the District of Columbia is one of the oldest badminton clubs in the country.  Records show that it was started as early as 1947.  Clay Norment, president of the club in the early 1970s, is credited with elevating the club to its largest membership with more than 100 active members.  The club was playing at the gym at St. Albans School in Northwest Washington at the time.  The Badminton Club of DC continues to play in the same facility, which is on the grounds of an English Gothic-style cathedral on the highest point in Washington, DC, the beautiful Washington National Cathedral.

The Badminton Club of DC, a member of USA Badminton and the Northeast Badminton Association, plays on Thursday nights (7:30 to 9:30 pm) and Sunday afternoons (4:00 to 6:00 pm) from September to June on three courts in the Activities Building at St. Albans School.  The facilities are excellent.  The courts are well marked, the ceiling is high, the lighting is good.  The courts are also well maintained.  The club is centrally located in the DC metropolitan area and there is convenient parking available.

Competition is good for all levels of play – from the beginner to the advanced to the tournament player.  The club encourages new members to join – including beginners, who have access to a court that the club sets aside for them on Sunday afternoons.  Seasonal and nightly fees are available, and the first visit is only $6.

The Badminton Club of DC fosters the growth of badminton by promoting and organizing tournaments.  For example, the club co-hosts the annual National Capital (DC) Open Badminton Tournament that is held at the University of Maryland at College Park, and has hosted the Senior National Tournament when in the DC area, most recently held in Washington in 2002.

All this combines to make truly capital badminton!
